For those of you who are somehow still in the dark about what facebook is, don’t worry, this isn’t about mug shots or anything like that. Facebook is, according to its own website, "an online directory that connects people through social networks at schools." It connects students and staff with fellow students and staff by mutual student organizations, classes and personal interrests such as music, movies and jobs. You can also sign up for groups such as "Middletown U-Turn Club" and "I love to drunk dial" as well as academic groups such as "MMSG", "Illuminati" and even "KAOS"

Facebook.com gives a rather staunch definition of what it is so I decided to find out what the real frenzy is behind facebook. For this I went to an expert, Facebook addict, freshman, Lindsay Wagoner. The marketing major says that "facebook is an awesome way to stay connected to friends and family, but also to get to know a little bit more about the people you see everyday." Upon asking several others, I found that her opinion seems to be unanimous throughout campus.

Facebook isn’t all good though. We learned this the hard way early in the fall 2005-06 semester after the tragic rape incident on the Oxford campus. Freshman, microbiology major, James Sharpe, an Oxford student that was charged with inducing panic when he distastefully made the sketch of the rapist his own facebook picture. There has also been debate about the safety of putting all of your personal information on such an accessible website. While facebook offers security settings such personal information such as phone number, home address or cell phone number may be accessed.

Despite the obvious risks, facebook seems to be a huge hit everywhere. See just how addicting the site can be for yourself. Check it out at www.facebook.com. All you need to sign up is a school email address. While you are there, be sure and check out the KAOS facebook group!
